April's Art for Park Event

PONSHOP Studio is excited to announce the second month of “Art for Park” – a skateboard art show to benefit the Fredericksburg Skate Park Project. Over fifty local and national artists have transformed the standard street skateboard deck into a work of art for the walls (or for wheels).  To usher in April’s First Friday opening reception, PONSHOP is teaming up with Richmond-based non-profit, Studio Two Three, who will be offering screen-printing activities via their mobile print truck stationed in front of the gallery.  Our neighbors at Benny Vitali’s (722 Caroline St.) are contributing to the community effort by throwing a “Dough Raiser” on Thursday, April 5 (11am-11pm) contributing up to 20% of their proceeds towards the Fredericksburg Skate Park Project.

“Art for Park” is a celebration of skateboard art and culture. What better way to rally the community than by having artists give their voice on what has, over the past fifty years, become an iconic symbol of youth culture and recreation.  This is PONSHOP’s eleventh community art exhibit and we are collaborating with Magic Bullet Records and Skateboards and the Fredericksburg Skate Park Project to build community support for a better place to skate in Fredericksburg. We have a soft spot for the Saint Clair Brooks Memorial Park - the existing wood and steel ramps and concrete surfaces are dilapidated, weathered, and in desperate need of a renovation. “Art for Park” is the beginning of a sustained effort to raise awareness of the importance of skateboarding as both art form and recreation and to promote the Fredericksburg Skate Park Project. Initiated in 2013, this organization is dedicated to improving the existing skate spot at Brooks Park and promoting a safe and friendly public park for the entire community.

Five Dollars of every Artist Registration and 20% of all deck sales will benefit the park initiative.  As of this press release, “Art for Park” has raised $350 for the park initiative.

We have a soft spot for Brooks Park, but the existing wood and steel ramps are outdated, weathered, and in desperate need of a renovation. With the "Art for Park" exhibition series, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of skateboarding as both art form and recreation and promote the Fredericksburg Skate Park Project.

Submission Requirements: All artists must use the blank skateboard decks that PONSHOP provides at registration and all work must be for sale. Submit your best work! The gallery reserves the right to reject artwork based on quality: uniqueness and creativity, craftsmanship, and execution. Entries must be original creations of the artist – no reproductions of others artwork.  Upon receipt of completed artwork, PONSHOP will equip each deck with a fishing line through the truck holes for wall hanging. The “underside” (or convex side) of the skateboard deck is typically the side to be adorned.  All submissions must be intended to hang on the gallery walls (please refer to additional illustrations).

Entry Conditions: All artwork must be for sale. Artwork cannot have a retail price exceeding $300; artwork listed above $300 will automatically be decreased to $300. PONSHOP retains 40% of all sales, with another 20% going to the Fredericksburg Skate Park Project. Should your skateboard sell, artists retain 40%, which will be disbursed within 30 days of the exhibition closing (June 12). This exhibit is limited to 50 artist entries.

Artists are responsible for acquiring insurance on their own artwork. Although PONSHOP will take great care in the hanging and display of artwork at Sunken Well Tavern, the gallery will not be held responsible for items on exhibit.

Artwork delivered that is not dry, of poor assembly, or is incomplete will NOT be accepted.

Entry Procedure: There’s an entry fee of $40, which includes one blank skateboard and a donation to the Fredericksburg Skate Park Project. Entries are limited to one skateboard per artist. Artists must register and pay the entry fee on our website and choose whether you’d like your blank board to be shipped or to leave at PONSHOP’s storefront for free pick-up. Keep in mind that shipping to and from the gallery is the responsibility of the artist; if you ship your art to us, you must include a return shipping label or we will contact you after the exhibition to collect the shipping cost from you.

Delivery: Artwork must be delivered before Monday, May 7 to be included in the exhibition. Work delivered outside of these time windows will not be accepted, unless shipping is delayed or you are given permission to deliver late or early by gallery staff. Artwork must include a label with the title, medium, artist name as you’d like it to be displayed, and the retail price for the art. Retail Price is the price the art will be listed for sale as, the artist receives 40% Consignment after the conclusion of the exhibit.

Artwork Pick-Up: Hand-delivered unsold artwork must be picked up between Thursday, June 14 and Saturday, June 16. Skateboards shipped to the gallery must include a return shipping label or you will be contacted for shipping reimbursement. Artwork picked up after Saturday, June 16 will incur a storage fee of $10 per day. This will be enforced! All Artists will be notified via email on or before June 12 regarding the status of artwork sales.

Fredericksburg, Virginia – Rappahannock Area Community Services Board seeks entries for the 14th Annual “The Art of Recovery” exhibit. The art show features original artwork by adults with mental health challenges. The show is organized by members of Kenmore Club, RACSB’s psychosocial clubhouse for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. The exhibit will open Friday, May 4 at PONSHOP Studio and Gallery on Caroline Street in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The opening corresponds with ‘First Fridays.’ The exhibit runs through May 27 and coincides with National Mental Health Month.

The Art of Recovery provides a forum for artists living with mental illness to gain confidence in their abilities, address misconceptions surrounding mental illness and experience community support.

“Although art can be judged, art doesn’t judge,” said John Butler, Crisis Stabilization Coordinator for RACSB. “It’s so approachable and accessible that anyone is invited to take part and can take part. The Art of Recovery helps society in general to look at people beyond their disability—and for folks with disabilities to not be defined by their disability.”

The RACSB is accepting original drawings, paintings, sculpture, textiles, prints, mixed media, and ceramics. Artwork should be submitted by April 2. Entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form with the following requested information: name of the artist; year of completion (if known); locale of the artist; dimensions; medium; and sale price. PONSHOP will apply a reasonable commission on all artwork sold.

This way, if you’re unable to finish your deck in time for the March portion of the exhibition, you can still participate for the second half in April. Seventh Annual Jewelry Show

PONSHOP Studio and Gallery is pleased to announce our seventh annual jewelry show for the month of November showcasing the work of ten jewelry artists.  The opening reception will be Friday, November 3 from 6-9pm.  To celebrate the show, PONSHOP is offering a gift raffle during the opening reception.  Customers will receive a raffle ticket for each item purchased, eligible to win gifts at the end of the night.

Each artist brings their own unique style to the mix at PONSHOP, using materials such as semi-precious stones, wood & resin, copper, sterling silver & gold, found objects, stainless steel, and enamel.

Our jewelry exhibition features latest pieces from our favorite local jewelers: Leslie Brier, Terresa Buelow, Lisa Latendress, and Trish Schornagel. In addition, the show includes regional and national artists Elaine B, Daphne Olive, Lauren Pratt, Rare Bird Designs, Karen Smith, and Vanucci, Ltd.

Fur-Ever Friends Exhibition

Companionship, Loyalty, Unconditional Love – those are just a few aspects of why we choose to share our lives caring for (and being cared by) our pets.  PONSHOP Studio and Gallery is excited to collaborate with Shred Asylum in hosting “Fur-Ever Friends”, an exhibition celebrating the love we share with the animals in our lives.  The exhibit features contributions from eight participating artists all centered on this theme with artworks ranging in a variety of media.  The opening reception of “Fur-Ever Friends” will be Friday, September 1 (6-9pm).

Participating Artists include: Conrad Coe, Maddie Huddle, Anna Martin, Shannon Wang, Leah Emerald, Ben Morse, James Walker and Gabriel Pons.

Remixed 5 Vinyl Album Art Show

PONSHOP Studio and Gallery is pleased to announce their tenth community art exhibition in August of 2017. “Remixed 5” features original artwork using 12” vinyl record albums. The exhibit includes over fifty participating artists work on this unconventional canvas. The opening reception for “Remixed 5” will be Friday, August 4 (6-9pm).

This is the fifth year of the “Remixed” vinyl-themed show and PONSHOP has received an overwhelming response from local artists. As of this press release, the gallery has issued over seventy albums to be adorned by over thirty-five artists. This community art show has proven to be a great addition to the gallery’s exhibition schedule, involving artists of all backgrounds and also boasting affordable artworks for the home or office ranging from $25-$150. “Remixed 5” will be curated by gallery owners Scarlett and Gabriel Pons.

The First Friday Reception will include “Vintage DJ” services by Raven Hi-Fi, spinning tunes using a classic turntable setup.   PONSHOP’s garden space will boast an outdoor pop-up Listening Booth by The Record Mann Archive.  All are invited to celebrate in the art of vinyl.

All ages and skill levels are invited to participate. We encourage all participating artists to join us for the opening reception on August 4.

Entry Procedure: There’s an entry fee of $15 per vinyl album, or $40 for three albums with a limit of three submissions per artist. Artists must pay the entry fee at our storefront and receive ready-to-hang records at PONSHOP at time of purchase. The gallery will not ship records to prospective artists.

Delivery: Artists are to complete the Entry Form and return it with artwork by Sunday, July 30. Artwork must have entry tabs securely taped to the back of the corresponding record. Artists are responsible for transporting their work to and from the gallery.

The Art of Recovery

Opening Reception: Friday, May 5 from 5-9pm

 Fredericksburg, Virginia –A flower reaching for the sun, a bucolic landscape, a colorful tapestry. For people with mental illness, recovery is a very personal experience. Art allows individuals to create a path to recovery and capture what recovery means to them, and each year the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board showcases these visions of healing during its Art of Recovery exhibit.

This year, RACSB will hold the 13th annual Art of Recovery exhibit May 5 through May 29 at PONSHOP Studio and Gallery in Fredericksburg and will coincide with National Mental Health Month. The opening reception for the exhibit will be held Friday, May 5, from 5-9 p.m., featuring live music, poetry readings, and performance art in the gallery’s courtyard. The “Art, Expression, Light” portion of the exhibit will take place at 7:30pm during the First Friday reception.

The Art of Recovery exhibit is organized by members of the Kenmore Club, a psychosocial rehabilitation program operated by the RACSB. The exhibit will feature over 30 pieces from artists working in a variety of art mediums. Artwork includes original drawings on paper, acrylic and oil paintings on canvas, as well as mixed media and video.  All of the pieces will be available for purchase.

“One gentleman told me that he had gotten out of the hospital a few weeks ago and was contemplating taking his own life,” said Amy Jindra, program manager of Kenmore Club.  “But then he saw the paperwork for the Art of Recovery and decided it was a new opportunity.” 

PONSHOP Studio and Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Join us in appreciating the PONSHOP potters, as well as welcoming a new ceramicist, Ahnalisa Reavis, to the lineup. New work will also be on display by artists Scarlett Pons, Rachel Ruddle, and Matt James.

Join us in celebrating all things that grow as we usher in the beginning of spring with a Terrarium Workshop and a complimentary fine art exhibition featuring garden-themed ceramics and paintings.

Revive your green thumb during First Friday’s terrarium party using D.I.Y. kits supplied by PONSHOP. Show up any time between 6 and 8pm, and walk out with a completed and one-of-a-kind mini mossy world. $40 registration fee includes a glass container and all other materials as well as guided instruction from PONSHOP owner Scarlett Pons. Green thumb not required, but Registration is Required prior to event.

PONSHOP ceramic artists Matt James and Rachel Ruddle join Scarlett Pons in exhibiting garden-themed ceramics, planters, garden tags, and more.  Local oil painter Jenna Anderson will be exhibiting select nature-inspired drawings and paintings, joining Maddie Huddle and Gabriel Pons on the gallery walls.

PONSHOP Studio and Gallery is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the sixth annual jewelry show for the month of November showcasing the work of ten jewelry artists. 

Each artist brings their own unique style to the mix at PONSHOP, using materials such as semi-precious stones, wood & resin, copper, sterling silver & gold, found objects, stainless steel, and enamel. The opening reception will be Friday, November 4 for 6-10pm.

Our jewelry exhibition features latest pieces from our favorite local jewelers: Leslie Brier, Terresa Buelow, Haylee Hill, Lisa Latendress, and Trish Schornagel. In addition, the show includes regional and national artists Elaine B, Daphne Olive, Lauren Pratt, Karen Smith, and Vanucci, Ltd..

James Walker: "Points of Reference" Exhibit

For the months of September and October 2016, PONSHOP Studio and Gallery will be hosting “Points of Reference,” an exhibition featuring Leesburg artist James Walker. “Points of Reference” will showcase James Walker’s latest artwork series and will open with an artist’s reception on Friday, September 2 from 6-10pm.

“Points of Reference” explores the subject matter that inspires the artist and contains recurring themes that speak to the core of why the symbiotic relationship of art and life are vital to our being. James Walker explores a variety of artistic mediums, from photography and drawing, to painting and mixed media, as well as found object assemblage.

With a background in photojournalism, Walker takes a documentary approach to almost everything he creates, allowing his pieces to develop as a natural extension of existence. His work comes from a need to dissect the simulacra of the present moment and to be enveloped completely in every second of every day.  Join us for the opening reception of this exciting exhibition.

"Remixed 4" Vinyl Album Art Show

PONSHOP Studio is pleased to announce their eighth community art exhibition in August of 2016.  “Remixed 4” features original artwork using 12” vinyl record albums.  The exhibit includes over fifty participating artists working on this unconventional canvas.  The opening reception for “Remixed 4” will be Friday, August 5 (6-10pm).

This is the fourth year of the “Remixed” vinyl-themed show and PONSHOP has received an overwhelming response from local artists.  As of this press release, the gallery has issued over 80 albums to be adorned.  This community art show has proven to be a great addition to the gallery’s exhibition schedule, involving artists of all backgrounds and also boasting affordable artworks for the home or office ranging from $25-$200.  “Remixed 4” will be curated by gallery owners Scarlett and Gabriel Pons.

Participating artists include Diego Pons, Patricia Atkinson, Yanina Angelini, Amy Bayne, Sharon Blanchard, Morgan Buenos, Maddie Huddle, Newell Jones, Kay Portmess, Tim Rodgers Jr., Andrew Ruddle, Rachel Ruddle, Dolly Whitley, and many more.

Model Kit Marvels

PONSHOP Studio and Gallery is pleased to announce their seventh community art exhibition in July of 2016, “Model Kit Marvels.” The gallery will feature custom-painted model kits supplied by the New York-based company, Boundless Brooklyn, and adorned by over forty innovative artists from across the United States. The opening reception is Friday, July 1 from 6-10pm.

“Model Kit Marvels” is PONSHOP’s first partnership with Boundless Brooklyn, as well as PONSHOP’s first exhibit solely featuring three-dimensional artwork. Artists selected from three model kits: The New York City Water Tower, the Skateboard Half Pipe Ramp, or the Billboard Structure. The main event is the art exhibition, but PONSHOP will also be hosting a Do-It-Yourself Model Kit workshop from 6-8pm in the classroom during the opening reception and, weather permitting, their garden space will open for guests and artists.

Gallery co-owner Gabriel Pons comments, “The Boundless Brooklyn kits have been a great educational tool since we’ve been carrying them in our gallery last year.  I’ve used them as a means to educate our students in terms of architectural typology and historic precedent.  Painting them is a great design challenge for beginners and professionals alike.”

PONSHOP is pleased to announce our seventh community art exhibition in July of 2016, and we invite you to participate as an artist in the event! “Model Kit Marvels” will feature custom-painted model kits supplied by the New York-based company Boundless Brooklyn. Artists can select between the Boundless Brooklyn Half Pipe, Medium Water Tower, or Billboard kit. 

Entry Parameters: Artists can modify their model kit however they see fit, adorning with paint, markers, and incorporating additional materials.  The models, however, must retain the same "footprint" - meaning that no materials shall excessively extend beyond the volume of the model.  Boundless Brooklyn Kits must be purchased through PONSHOP. All artwork must be assembled and dry upon delivery and all work must be for sale (The gallery retains 40% commission on all sales).  The gallery reserves the right to reject entries based upon quality: uniqueness and creativity, craftsmanship and execution.  Late Entries will be rejected. Entries must be original creations of the artist - no reproductions of others artwork.

We encourage all participating artists to join us for the opening reception.  We'll be doing a Do-It-Yourself Model Kit workshop in our classroom and, weather permitting, we'll have our garden open as well for guests.

12th Annual "The Art of Recovery" Exhibit

The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) is pleased to announce the 12th Annual “The Art of Recovery” art show opening Friday, May 6, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at PONSHOP Studio and Gallery located at 712 Caroline Street in downtown Fredericksburg. The exhibit features original artwork of adults with mental illness. The show is organized by members of Kenmore Club, a psychosocial rehabilitation program operated by RACSB. The exhibit coincides with National Mental Health Month and will be on display locally through May 29, 2016.

“The Art of Recovery” show will feature more than 40 pieces from 35 artists and representing several art mediums. Artwork includes original drawings, paintings, three-dimensional artwork (sculpture), textiles, and mixed media.  All of the pieces will be available for purchase.

To correspond with the First Friday opening on May 6, 2016, there will be live music in the gallery’s garden courtyard at 7:30 p.m.

The Art of Recovery provides a forum for artists living with mental illness to gain confidence in their abilities, address misconceptions surrounding mental illness, and experience community support.

Founded in 1970, the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) provides public mental health, intellectual disability, substance abuse, and prevention/early intervention services to the residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. RACSB operates five outpatient clinics which provide individual, group and family therapy; specialized counseling and case management services; psychological assessment; 24-hour crisis intervention; and medication management services. RACSB operates 13 group homes and the Myers Drive Respite program for adults with intellectual disability providing 24-hour intensive and structured support. RACSB also offers mental health day support, residential services, and crisis stabilization at The Sunshine Lady House for Mental Health Wellness & Recovery. The Parent-Education – Infant Development Program provides developmental, physical, occupational, and speech therapies as well as service coordination to infants and toddlers with developmental delays. Programs of RACSB include Kenmore Club, Rappahannock Adult Activities, Inc., Project LINK, Program for Teen Parents, Rappahannock Area Kids on the Block, DARE To Be You – Rappahannock Area, Second Step, Too Good for Drugs, Healthy Families – Rappahannock Area, and Mental Health First Aid. Art Whino Announces "Destroy and Create" Show opening February 20

Gabe is excited to participate in "Destroy and Create" a skateboard ramp-themed group show organized by Art Whino celebrating the release of Boundless Brooklyn's Half Pipe model kit.

Boundless Brooklyn is a New York-based company that creates miniature cardboard models of the urban environment's most iconic structures.  The Brooklyn Water Tower model has been a popular teaching tool for kids and adults who enjoy constructing and adorning the city's architectural icons.  PONSHOP is proud to carry Boundless Brooklyn kits and will be offering a model workshop in March.

PONSHOP Studio and Gallery is pleased to announce their October exhibition introducing the artworks of Maddie Huddle.  Featuring a selection of oil paintings, her work transforms the ordinary into the unusual and invites viewers to reevaluate their perceptions of fine art. While named “Point of Entry” because it is her debut into the professional art world, the exhibition also acts as a gateway into the imagination of the artist herself. 

Maddie is a local artist and recent graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Communication Arts department. More of her work can be displayed at www.maddiehuddleart.com. 

2015 G40 Event Announced

Saturday, September 12 kicks off the sixth annual G40 Summit at WHINO on H St (700 H St NE, Washington, DC 20002) from 8-midnight.  Gabriel Pons and many lowbrow and contemporary artists from around the nation are contributing to this "installation" themed art show organized by Art Whino.  The image below is Gabriel's work featured in the artist Group Show.  Titled "Fate and Fortune #2", his piece exemplifies his use of collage, mixed media and stencils in his signature work.
