Student Work: Skate to Create, July 2012

July ushered in another "Skate to Create" workshop as part of our Summer Art Camp series.  Students designed and painted their own skateboard deck using spray paint and stencils.  Congratulations to our students who worked hard and managed to pull off great designs during a 100-degree heatwave.  Below are progress pics from the studio as well as the finished boards.

Student Work: Intro to Street Art, July 2012

"Intro to Street Art" has been one of the most popular workshops this summer.  In three 1.5-hour sessions, students were given instruction on how to design and cut their own paper stencils which were then sprayed onto a 24"x24" masonite board.  Congratulations on a job well done!

Student Work: Recycled Robot Workshop, July 2012

Step aside R2D2, there is a new robot in town... or shall we say robots! Instructed by Leslie Brier, students went out of this world when they came up with these awesome designs creating unique robots using a variety of recycled materials. Check out these mechanically inspired works of art in the gallery below. Want to make your own? Click here to view our class schedule.

Student Work: Children's Drawing, June 2012

Starting with simple drawing techniques, these students created works to visually express themselves using pencils, markers and other media.  Instructor Gabriel Pons gave the students exercises in Map-making, Gesture Sketching, and light and shadow study.  In their last session,  students drew complete life sized self-portraits! These children showed incredible patience and ability throughout the workshop.  Congratulations!

Student Work: Intro to Street Art, June 2012

The week of June 18 kicked off the summer series of art workshops at PONSHOP.  Here are pics from the "Intro to Street Art" workshop. Throughout the course of three 1.5 hour sessions, students learned about the designing and cutting their own stencil designs as well as how to properly use spray paint to apply their designs on a surface.  PONSHOP offers classes ranging from painting and ceramics to jewelry design and photography.  For a current class schedule, click here.

"ReUsed/ReMixed" Painted Vinyl Album Workshop

Sunday April 29 kicked off the "ReUsed/ReMixed" Painted Vinyl Album Workshop at the G40 event space in Richmond, Virginia.  We had a great turnout of students who enthusiastically took on the challenge of creating their own design on an old 12" vinyl record.  PONSHOP co-owner, Gabriel Pons, walked the students from brainstorming ideas to applying their designs on the records using acrylic paint, paint pens, or spray paint and stencils.  Special thanks to Art Whino and RVA Magazine for organizing this year's G40 Summit and congratulations to all the people that came out to participate in this art workshop - good work!

March 2012 Student Work: Skate to Create and Adult Mixed Media

Check out the work of our "Skate to Create" and "Adult Mixed Media" students from March. Both classes use the art of stencil making and various spray painting techniques to construct a finalized piece in just three 1.5-hour sessions. We still have room in our May workshops. ReUsed/ReMixed Workshop Announced

Gabriel Pons will be teaching the ReUsed/ReMixed Painted Vinyl Album workshop this Sunday, April 29 from 1-3 pm at Art Whino's G40 event space (115 West Broad Street). This workshop is free and open to the public.

Student Work: Couples Clay and Private Classes

Here at the PONSHOP we offer innovative ways to bring creativity into your lives. In February, we brought love and creation together in our new couples clay workshop. After just three hours and a lot of footsie, these couples made their very own kissing bowls! We are also happy to work with you to bring your own ideas to life in private classes. One of our students wanted to cut her own designs into clay to create a hollow ceramic sphere and... We helped make it happen!

Whatever your level, whatever your desire, if you have an interest for art come take a class!  Check out our class schedule for more details.

Mixing the Media Class February 2012

February 2012 kicked off another fun session of Mixing the Media. In three 1.5 hour sessions students explored collage and acrylic painting to create their own mixed media scenes on canvas. Below are some pics of the student work. Congrats guys!

Second Annual PONSHOP Student Show Announcement

PONSHOP will be hosting their second annual Student Art Show in February 2012. Educating as many 98 students in 2011, the gallery will exhibit a cross section of paintings and ceramics completed by PONSHOP students over the past year. Student work will include all Adult and Youth Mixed Media and Ceramics, Intro to Street Art, Skate to Create, Adult Drawing, and Through an Architect’s Eyes workshops as well as many private sessions.  The exhibit is a means of encouraging students to continue to participate in the city’s art community, allowing their work to take center stage.  PONSHOP owners Scarlett and Gabriel Pons feel that it is important to continue to mentor students on the process of presenting their artwork in a gallery setting.

In addition, PONSHOP is offering its gallery during First Friday’s opening to host a fundraiser to benefit Massaponax High School art students planning a three-day Art-based field trip to New York City this spring.  That evening, MHS students will be selling their original artwork and baked goods to raise money for their trip.  Sponsored by Massaponax High School art teacher Patricia Atkinson and organized through EF Tours and the Smithsonian Institute, the trip will include visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, The MOMA, and the Guggenheim Museum.

Participating PONSHOP students include:  Barbara Deal, Jack Weisenberger, Hannah Mann, Jeff Gulick, Sidney Mullis, Terry Pitzel, Tara and Maran Lee and many more.  PONSHOP is genuinely excited to feature the work of their students and hope that you can join us for this exclusive event.

Opening Reception:  Friday, February 3 (6-10pm)

Exhibition Dates:  Friday, February 3 to Sunday, February 26
